Haitian Cultural Awareness Week @ MSSM

As a conglomerate of both supporters and very invested medical and graduate students from a multitude of backgrounds (Haitian and non-Haitian), MS4H-MSSM is looking to make our presence known on the Mount Sinai campus. We are planning a series of events during the first ever Haitian Cultural Awareness Week, from Feb. 13-17, 2012. We are reaching out far and wide to build a network of individuals committed to helping our organization see its goals through.

Some of the events planned are:

Monday 2/13

  • A “Love For Haiti” Pre-Valentine’s Day Bake Sale and T-Shirt sale, where we will be selling baked goods, candy-grams and t-shirts in front of Sinai Cafe, to be either consumed or delivered on campus on Valentine’s Day.
  • A joint event Monday night with the Sinai Salseros, where traditional Haitian dance will be showcased and taught in a fun, informal setting in the Annenberg Student Lounge.
Tuesday 2/14
  • Delivery of “Love For Haiti” goods!

Wednesday 2/15

  • A Journal Club Meeting which will interpret current literature on disaster management with reference to Haiti. Co-sponsored event with CMCA and AACC.

Thursday 2/16

  • Our Keynote Speaker Event, where Evenel St-Vil, from Afya’s group in Haiti, will come speak about his experiences finding his niche through helping others after having his own world turned upside down, as well as a potential relationship and joint projects between Afya and MS4H. Mr. St-Vil is a former English Teacher in Haiti who lost his home to the devastating 2010 earthquake, and has rebuilt his life around rehabilitating people in Haiti to make sure that they lead productive and healthy lives again. Also speaking is the Executive Director of Afya, Danielle Butin, MPH, OTR. Ms. Butin has dedicated countless hours to traveling abroad and furthering the work of Afya. Based out of Yonkers, NY, Afya (Swahili for ‘good health’) is an organization that operates internationally; Afya collects and ships medical supplies as they are needed, and also organizes and sends teams of medical personnel to rehabilitate and heal people in need. Check out Afya here. Co-sponsored event with CMCA and AACC.

Friday 2/17

  • To wrap everything up, we would like to invite the Mount Sinai community out to celebrate with us. We are planning a night of fun with libations, Haitian and Caribbean music and overall good vibes to start or end your night.
